Programme Overview
The Nurse Attendant Programme is a one-year formal training course designed to equip learners with basic nursing and health care skills. The programme integrates theory and clinical practice to prepare students to function effectively under the supervision of trained nurses in hospitals, clinics, and community health settings.

Vision: To develop the skills of Nurse Attendants so that the communities they serve receive a high standard of healthcare.
Mission: To provide quality nursing education and training that embodies the aspirations of the Gambian people and global community through the creation, preservation, and application of nursing knowledge.
Programme Philosophy
The programme is guided by the International Code of Nursing Ethics and the regulations of The Gambia Nurses and Midwives Council. It aims to produce motivated, ethical, and competent Nurse Attendants capable of assisting professional nurses in promoting health, preventing disease, and caring for patients with compassion and professionalism.
Objectives
- Discuss the history and nature of nursing nationally and internationally.
- Apply nursing ethics and standards to real-life situations.
- Demonstrate basic first aid and emergency response skills.
- Assist trained nurses in patient assessment, planning, and care delivery.
- Provide basic home-based care and rehabilitation support.
- Develop professional growth through continuous learning and the use of health information systems.

Entry Requirements
- Academic: Minimum of three WASSCE credits/passes including English, Mathematics, and Biology/Science/Health Science.
- Alternative Entry: Experienced Nurse Attendants with at least three years of service may be admitted as mature students.
- Age: Minimum entry age of 18 years.
Programme Duration
The course duration is one year, including classroom instruction, clinical practice, and internship placements across health facilities in The Gambia.
